A message from Chief Leonard Papania

Dear Residents of the City of Gulfport,

The Community Watch Program is a proven initiative that has operated for over 30 years in cities and counties nationwide. This program establishes a vital partnership between local officials, law enforcement, and residents to help protect and strengthen our communities.

In neighborhoods across America, residents have joined together to create Community Watch groups because they understand that their active participation is key to enhancing public safety. By staying alert, identifying suspicious activity, and promptly reporting it to law enforcement, neighbors play an essential role in reclaiming and protecting their communities.

These efforts not only improve security but also foster a greater sense of peace throughout the community. In light of the challenges our nation has faced, especially after September 11, 2001, Community Watch programs have become even more essential in building resilience. Beyond crime prevention, these programs also serve as a foundation for addressing other important issues, such as disaster preparedness, evacuation drills, and emergency exercises.

As the Gulfport Police Department, we are committed to prioritizing and supporting Gulfport’s Community Watch efforts. The men and women of the Gulfport Police Department recognize that teamwork is essential in solving the challenges we face, and we are eager to collaborate with residents in this shared mission.

We encourage every Gulfport resident to get involved—organize your neighbors, motivate one another, and participate in making Gulfport a safe and thriving community.
